Post 8: Chilean Revolution

In the last few classes, we have been discussing the Chilean Revolution in Professor Stark's portion of the class, and analyzing poems and stories in Professor Serrata's portion of the class. During Professor Stark's portion of the class, we discussed Chile before and after Allende. It was really interesting how things changed and the different perspectives with Chile when it came to the working class and socialism. How did socialism become an option to them? Why did they choose socialism to try an enforce? I just find it interesting because it was pretty rare to lean towards socialism and communism in the Americas. Especially with the U.S. involvement to protect their economic interests, it just seems interesting to me. We went on to see many changes to the economic and work aspects of Chile. However, in Professor Serrata's portion of the class, we talk about material wealth and what should truly be important to someone. We read a story about a material wealth Balthazar's Marvelous Afternoon, which was about Balthazar caring about material wealth, and then realizing that material wealth isn't as important as happiness that comes from non-tangible things. When he gave away the gift to get something more than material wealth, it made him happier and more significant to him, which gives the aspect of happiness without material wealth. We also read about a poem called The Height of Macchu Picchu, which was about the poet's adventure and journey to Macchu Picchu. Although, there was more to it than just the journey of his study of the city. Instead it was also a journey to find his inner self. Both of these readings were based on how someone feels on the inside and what is truly important to them. I feel like both portions are related by the revolution is usually based on what you believe and want, which is why people fight the higher class and leadership. Their feelings and inner self is what helps people to fight for what they believe in and what they want in life.
